Read the property with its method
A material comparison needs the measurement method beside Tg. Datasheets may report different thermal analysis methods, and those results should not be silently mixed into a single ranking. Isola's FR408HR datasheet presents thermal properties as distinct measured characteristics. In a design review, retain the original datasheet and revision instead of copying an isolated headline into the stackup spreadsheet. That prevents a later buyer from interpreting an abbreviated value as a complete material specification.
Map the heat exposure before ranking candidates
List fabrication lamination steps, planned assembly passes, possible rework, and the operating environment. These are different exposures with different durations. A board may experience its most severe temperature excursion during assembly rather than in service. Ask the material and fabrication teams to assess the proposed sequence together. If the prototype used fewer assembly passes than the production product, record that gap instead of assuming the prototype demonstrates the final thermal margin.
Look beyond a higher headline Tg
Include z-axis expansion, decomposition behavior, moisture conditioning, adhesion, and the actual copper interconnect geometry in the comparison. A narrow improvement in one property can be outweighed by a poorly chosen build-up construction. For example, changing resin systems while keeping an old lamination recipe and drill process creates a new manufacturing question. The useful engineering choice is the construction with demonstrated suitability for the required exposure, not simply the candidate with the largest number in one column.
Make verification represent the finished board
Use a qualification vehicle that includes the intended microvia spans, stacking arrangement, dielectric thicknesses, and plated through-hole structures. Decide in advance how electrical continuity will be observed during or after stress and what constitutes failure. Record the assembly profile used for evaluation. When a material changes, review whether existing evidence still covers the new construction. A drawing note that says high Tg cannot replace a documented test plan tied to the manufactured geometry.
A construction is more than its laminate name
Dielectric · geometry + material
Core or build-up dielectric
Illustrative only. Copper thickness, dielectric construction and via spans require a reviewed stackup.
Common questions
Is Tg the safe continuous operating temperature?
No. Continuous-use suitability involves other material ratings, the assembly, and the application. Do not use Tg alone to set a product temperature limit.
Will a higher-Tg alternative be a drop-in replacement?
Not automatically. Check processing, expansion, electrical properties, and available constructions, then decide which design and reliability checks must be repeated.
