Identify the item before choosing the rule
A partly cured prepreg sheet, a fully cured laminate core, and a finished PCB are not interchangeable storage cases. Label inventory accordingly and attach the relevant instructions to each stage. Isola's I-Speed guide treats prepreg storage and finished-board packaging separately. Its recommended conditions are product-specific. Use that distinction to design the handoff, while obtaining the current instructions for the actual material and finished board being purchased.
Prevent an unclear exposure history
At receipt, record package condition, material identity, lot, and any humidity indicators supplied. When packaging is opened for inspection, capture the event and follow the applicable resealing instructions. Keep material awaiting disposition distinct from accepted inventory. For cold-stored material, review the supplier's equilibration instructions before opening the package; the transition to a warmer environment is part of handling. These records help explain process variation that would otherwise appear as an unexplained fabrication or assembly failure.
Treat drying as a controlled decision
If the board's history is uncertain, ask the fabricator and assembler to agree on disposition. A bake changes the board's thermal history and can interact with its surface finish or other materials. Do not invent a temperature and duration from a rule used for a different product. Record who supplied the procedure, the conditions used, and the allowed interval before assembly. If no approved procedure exists, resolve that gap before committing the affected boards to reflow.
Close the loop after inspection and rework
Inspection, electrical test, shipment, and rework can all interrupt the planned material flow. Assign responsibility for packaging after each step so an inspected board does not spend an undefined period exposed on a shelf. Retain lot traceability when panels are separated into individual boards. During a reliability investigation, compare handling history with the actual assembly profile and board construction. This makes moisture a testable hypothesis rather than the default explanation for every thermal defect.

Common questions
Does low reported moisture absorption remove storage controls?
No. A datasheet property is measured under specified conditions. It does not replace handling instructions for the actual material and finished board.
Should every bare PCB be baked before assembly?
No universal instruction applies. Use the approved process for the board's material, finish, packaging history, and assembly requirements.
