Make the optical datum explicit
Specify which mechanical features locate the image sensor relative to the lens and housing. Agree on the dimensions that matter to the optical assembly instead of applying tight tolerances to every board edge. Identify whether alignment happens before or after the board is bonded or screwed into position.
Ask the assembly team where fixtures contact the board. A convenient fixture location that bends the sensor region can undermine a carefully dimensioned optical stack. Keep adhesive and fastener areas in the PCB model.
Define the actual host channel
NXP's i.MX documentation and camera design resources show that the camera connection belongs to a specific processor platform. Select the sensor, host PHY and connector as one interface and use their applicable documentation; the label MIPI alone does not define every routing constraint.
Include flex cables, interposers and both connectors in the channel review. Avoid spending all of the routing allowance on the sensor board while leaving the host board unspecified. Record lane assignment and polarity decisions for firmware and hardware reviewers.
Separate density from measurement quality
Map clock, digital output and sensor supply paths before placing a nearby switching regulator. Examine whether a denser escape pushes noisy circuitry closer to sensitive sensor connections. The right comparison is image quality and link stability in the available space, not merely the shortest total trace length.
- Confirm the sensor package footprint and assembly orientation.
- Review lens holder and stiffener keepouts on every relevant layer.
- Reserve measurements for supply ripple and interface bring-up.
- Check connector retention and repeated assembly handling.
Test the modes that reveal layout problems
Build a matrix of intended resolutions, frame rates, exposure modes and temperature conditions. Include low light scenes and operation of nearby radios or illumination drivers where relevant. Save the settings with image and link error observations so hardware changes can be compared consistently.
If a prototype requires a bodge wire or extra decoupling, document its geometry before the next layout. A schematic update alone may not reproduce the improvement when the components move.
Adjacent-layer access, one connection at a time

Illustrative only. Copper thickness, dielectric construction and via spans require a reviewed stackup.

Common questions
Can the camera board and host board use unrelated stackups?
Yes, but each segment must meet the interface requirements and the complete connection must be evaluated. Matching board layer counts is not the objective.
Should every camera signal be length matched?
Apply the selected device and interface requirements to the relevant groups. Indiscriminate meanders can add routing complexity without improving the channel.
