Ask what the number represents
Before entering a value into a field solver, find out whether it is a material quality-control value, a construction table value, or a circuit-oriented design value. Rogers distinguishes design Dk from other reported dielectric data and describes how it is obtained. Those distinctions matter because a measurement fixture and a routed transmission line do not necessarily sample the material in the same way. Preserve that context in the model notes.
Avoid an accidental comparison
Build a comparison sheet with columns for material designation, glass style, resin content, frequency, conditioning, and test method. Leave unknown fields visibly unresolved. Do not rank two candidates by tiny differences in Df if the measurements were made under unlike conditions. A practical first comparison is whether each supplier provides enough information to model the intended construction. Missing context can create more uncertainty than the apparent performance difference between the headline values.
Use the right level of model detail
An early impedance estimate may use a simplified dielectric model to establish routing feasibility. Final channel analysis needs assumptions appropriate to its bandwidth and margin. For a pair that crosses different layers, use the relevant propagation behavior of each route segment. If simulation and measurement disagree, verify thickness, copper geometry, roughness, and launch treatment before changing dielectric inputs. Fitting every discrepancy into Dk or Df can hide the real manufacturing or measurement issue.
Communicate a property change as a design change
A proposed material substitution should identify what happens to impedance, delay, and loss separately. Keeping the old line width may preserve routing clearance yet miss the new impedance target. Changing width to restore impedance can affect escape density and conductor loss. Ask for a revised stackup calculation and decide whether timing or channel simulations need to be rerun. Store approved inputs alongside the fabrication drawing so that future revisions begin from the same electrical model.

Common questions
Can a datasheet Dk be used directly in any calculator?
It can be a preliminary input, but confirm that the value and calculator model represent the chosen construction and frequency range before release.
Is a lower Dk always better?
No. The useful value is the one that supports the required geometry, delay, and performance. Consistency and correct modeling are often more important than a lower headline number.
