Turn a family preference into a purchasing specification
Panasonic presents multiple MEGTRON series with different performance positions and includes designated halogen-free products. Therefore, a drawing that says only MEGTRON leaves significant choices unresolved. Ask the proposer to provide the complete laminate and bonding-material designations. Attach the relevant current datasheets to the review. This also makes quotations easier to compare because each supplier must respond to a defined construction instead of choosing a different interpretation of the family name.
Build the comparison around the critical path
Suppose a board has a short processor-to-memory connection and a longer connector-facing serial channel. Do not assume both paths need the same material performance simply because they share a board. Model the demanding path first and establish what improvement is required. Compare candidate MEGTRON constructions using matching route geometry, impedance, copper assumptions, and frequency range. A useful material decision states the recovered margin and the assumptions behind it, rather than declaring a series inherently best.
Check the thin layers needed by HDI
Ask whether the selected grade is available in the thin constructions required for the build-up. Review the proposed microvia span and the laminate/prepreg combination together. The electrical preference may constrain the physical stackup, or a readily available construction may require a different routing width. Resolve that interaction before placing dense via arrays. Include copper treatment in the discussion, because changing only the resin designation leaves conductor behavior and bonding requirements unspecified.
Protect the approved configuration through production
Write the permitted material and construction alternatives explicitly. If a supply change moves the board to a different series or grade, require an electrical and process comparison even when the supplier considers it an upgrade. An electrically lower-loss option can still change impedance or require process adjustment. Preserve coupon results with the actual material and foil identifiers. That connection between test evidence and production configuration is more useful than a generic approved-brand list.
A construction is more than its laminate name
Dielectric · geometry + material
Core or build-up dielectric
Illustrative only. Copper thickness, dielectric construction and via spans require a reviewed stackup.
Common questions
Is a higher MEGTRON series number always the right choice?
No. Select against the design's required margin, available construction, and production constraints. Avoid ranking materials by the family number alone.
Can a quote simply say MEGTRON or equivalent?
That is too open for a tightly controlled design. Define the acceptable properties, exact constructions, and engineering approval process for alternatives.
