Choose the board's responsibility boundary
A module can move substantial design work into a purchased assembly, but its carrier still owns connectors, interface routing and power integration. A custom processor board allows different packaging choices while taking responsibility for more of the hardware design. Compare both against the product's constraints and team resources.
List the interfaces required in the shipping configuration. Debug and demonstration connectors from a development kit need not all occupy production board space, but removing recovery access should be a deliberate engineering choice.
Plan bring-up before optimizing density
NVIDIA's Jetson bring-up documentation separates hardware and software checks for custom carrier boards. Apply the same discipline to an edge design: assign observable checkpoints to power, reset, boot storage and each external interface.
Keep accessible points for the measurements that can distinguish these stages. If connectors must be removed for size, provide a documented fixture or service interface that preserves the required diagnostic capability. Include fixture contact locations in the mechanical layout review.
Route for the installed workloads
Camera capture, storage traffic, networking and inference can occur together. Map simultaneous activity and the resulting power and heat before placing the module. A layout optimized around one demonstration workload may have little margin in the intended application.
- Identify every interface enabled by the module pin configuration.
- Check storage and network channels with their actual connectors.
- Reserve airflow, heatsink mounting and cable exit volumes.
- Define the external power source and startup behavior.
Evaluate the benefit of HDI at the connector
Perform an escape study at the densest module connector or processor package. Determine whether microvias reduce routing detours or preserve reference planes. Compare the result with an alternate connector orientation before introducing a deeper buildup construction.
For a production release, retain module compatibility assumptions, carrier revision and firmware configuration together. A board that works with one module variant should not be represented as validated for every mechanically similar module without checking its electrical and software requirements.

Common questions
Does using a compute module eliminate high speed PCB design?
No. The carrier may still route cameras, storage, networking and other demanding interfaces. Use the selected module's integration guidance for every exposed connection.
What is the most useful prototype feature to retain?
A dependable recovery and diagnostic path is often valuable. Choose its form according to the enclosure and service model rather than removing it simply to save connector area.
