Use the family information to begin the review

Isola lists HDI compatibility and multiple lamination cycles among I-Speed's processing attributes. Its product page also supplies construction-specific dielectric tables and different copper options. These are useful starting points for material screening. In the request for quotation, identify the intended build-up spans and critical routing layers so the fabricator can propose a concrete construction. Avoid asking only for an I-Speed board and leaving the rest of the electrical stackup implicit.

Select the construction before fixing line widths

For each signal layer, record the adjacent material, pressed thickness, copper thickness, and dielectric inputs used by the solver. Different core and prepreg constructions within the family should not automatically share one electrical value. Have the fabricator review available constructions before routing the narrowest escape channels. If a proposed change alters the layer gap, compare its effect on both impedance widths and microvia geometry rather than accepting the thickness change in isolation.

Compare the complete channel with the baseline

To decide whether I-Speed is appropriate, model the required route against the existing material candidate using equivalent impedance and clearly stated copper assumptions. Keep connectors and via transitions unchanged during the first comparison so the material contribution is visible. Then optimize the full route if necessary. Request loss evidence only where the design needs it, and specify how launches and reference planes will be handled in any coupon measurement.

Document the manufacturing agreement

The released stackup should name the material and construction revision, foil option, allowed substitutions, and agreed verification. Include the intended thermal exposure and via arrangement in the review package. If the board uses repeated build-up cycles, ask whether the fabricator's evidence covers that sequence. Keep current material documentation with the release because product tables can change. Approval should be based on a defined build, with any later construction change returned for engineering assessment.

Common questions

Is I-Speed automatically required for high-speed HDI?

No. It is one candidate. Use the interface budget, route geometry, material availability, and fabrication evidence to choose an appropriate construction.

Can I use a single headline Dk for every I-Speed layer?

Use construction-specific values where they are available and relevant. Verify the frequency and method rather than copying one product-page number into all layers.
